This post made me think of one of my kids' favorite picture books: The Big Orange Splot by Daniel Pinkwater. Their favorite lines is at the end "My house is me and I am it. My house is where I like to be and it looks like all my dreams."'
I came here to suggest the same book for you! The Big Orange Splot is a picture book that was my favorite growing up. I feel like the world’s “neat street” vs. neighbors painting their house just as they like it will appeal to writers of all ages.
I'm right there with you on writing a book that is a bit "out there" (sort of weird girl lit, sort of not) but the character is so present in my head that I have to write it. I don't expect the people who read my first book to like it but then maybe they will. Both books fall under the coming-of-age umbrella and maybe being out of the box makes this one a bit more interesting? I guess I have to wait to find out. LOL. And I love the purple house! Very cheery!
I love both of these bold choices! I mean, that color just pops! And I agree it's so much better to write a book that is beloved by and resonates with a subset of readers than a book that's kind of okay for a lot of them.
On another note, I love the typos = not AI callout! I've started saying that too, and it is SO freeing that my editor brain no longer worries about typos but instead embraces them as a badge of honor of sorts.
Thank you! Our house was built in 1890, and I feel like people in this neighborhood can sometimes be sticklers about historical accuracy... but I LOVE an old house in a fun color!

Love the purple!
I love this! I have been telling people, "I've always wanted a purple house-- this is the house color of my dreams!!"

I adore! I’m glad you went with your gut. It’s like the external move you needed to make to satisfy that internal need, to listen your heart.
Why are people so obsessed with blending in? You go, girl!
LOVE that house color! So fun! And thanks for all this encouragement and the resources!

Love a purple house! And good luck with the new project.
I am stealing the 'purple house attitude'. I need it more than ever!

Love the purple house— and to further prove your point, it would fit right in in my neighborhood!
